The animals in Australia, part 2

The Kookaburra, is a bird and has the size of crow, with a wide, strong beak. It eats fish, insects and small animals as lizards, snakes and other birds' chicks. They are famous for their voices which is very loud and similar to human laughter. There are four known species of kookaburras found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Aru Islands.

The Box Jellyfish, is the most dangerous animal in australia and are among the most venomous creature in the world. If you have the misfortune to be burned, you do not have many minutes to get to the hospital to survive. The Box jellyfish are known for the extremely potent venom. Stings from these species are extremely painful and are often deadly for animals and human.

The Taipan, is a large, fast and highly venomous snake often found throughout Australia. The taipan has the most toxic venom out of all the species worldwide. This snake has a dark brown color and its often found in sugar fields where it hunts for rats. Taipan's usually stays away from people, but sometimes when they feel threatened they attack.

The animals in Australia, part 1

There are many different species of wildlife in Australia. Many of the animals you can only find there. Marsupials are the most common group of animals in Australia. But there are also some egg-laying mammals.

This are some of the animals that only exists in Australia:

The most famous marsupial in Australia is the Kangaroo. The kangaroo has become a national symbol for Australia. There are a total of 50 species of kangaroo. Different species of kangaroos have different diets, so you can't say that the Kangaroo eats something special. But they are vegetarians. The kangaroo carry their child in pouches.

Today, The Koala Bear, are a very rare animal. You can find the animal in the south and east of Australia. Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves. When the koalas not eating, they usually sleep. On one day the koala sleeps 18-22 hours. Most people think that the koala is a kind of bear. But the koala is not a bear, it's a marsupial.

The Platypus, is a cute egg-laying mammal that only lives in Australia. Platypus eat insects or small animals such as worms and shrimps. On most days the platypus sleeps, and is active at night.
Platypuses hunt underwater. I think the platypus look pretty weird. It looks like an otter with beaver tail, but has a beak.

Why move there?

Why you should move to Australia? Well, there are many different reasons why you might want to move there. Different people may have different reasons for moving to Australia. It may be because you want to move to the beautiful and warm climate. Or it could be that you want to live with all the different animal species? Or perhaps it is Australia's beautiful cities that attract?

One thing that interests me is the great barrier reef on the coast of Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest system of coral reefs. It is made up of billions of small organisms. It lives loads of different fish species in the Barrier Reef. And the tourism in the Barrier Reef is high because many want to dive there and explore the underwater world.

Another thing you can do in Australia is to go to the Sydney Opera House and watch a performance. Sydney Opera House, is one of the world's most famous buildings. Dane Jørn Utzon was the architect of the building, which opened 20 October 1973.

There are lots of more things you can do in Australia. And if you should decide to move to there, pack your bags and go. It really is a great idea! Australia is really a great country in my opinion.

When? - Australian history

The founders of Australia were the Aboriginals. They came to Australia thousands of years before the white people discovered it. The Aboriginals have lived in Australia for at least 40,000 years. No one really knows exactly where the Aboriginals lived before they came to Australia. But some people think that the Aboriginals came from somewhere in South-East Asia and that they traveled to Australia in canoes or on rafts.

It was in 1616 as the first white man, Dick Hartong, arrived in Australia. But it was not until after Captain James Cook arrived in Botany Bay (south of the current Sydney) in 1770, as people from Europe began to move there. When Cook's discovery later would lead to the first European settlements in Australia, are Cook often viewed as Australia's European explorer.

Most people who came to Australia were prisoners who were sent there by the British government. They placed the prisoners in Australia to reduce the congestion in Britain's overcrowded prisons. The prisoners had to work as slaves, and build up cities. Until 1850 the population grew slowly, but in 1851 started the gold rush. Hopeful men poured from America and China, hoping to get rich from the gold. But in the end it was quite a few who became rich.

What? - Capital and other important cities

The capital of Australia is Canberra. The city is located in the Australian Capital Territory, surrounded by New South Wales. It lives around 347,000 people in Canberra and is Australia's eighth largest city. The language that people speak in Canberra and in Australia is English. The currency of Australia is the Australian dollar.

Canberra covers an area of 805.6 square kilometers and is located near the Brindabella mountain range, about 150 kilometers from the east coast of Australia. Canberra is a very green city and has lots of parks and shady streets.

Another major city in Australia is Sydney. Sydney is Australia's largest and oldest city. Because of Sydney's location in the harbor, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Sydney's two best-known buildings is The Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They have become symbols of Australia.

Where? - Geography facts

Australia is an island, a very large island. In fact, Australia is the second largest island in the world (after Greenland). Australia is located in the continent of Oceania. The total area of Australia is 7.682.300 km². Since Australia is located in the sea, the country has no real neighboring countries. It lives 22,597,955 people in Australia.

The climate of Australia varies from place to place. In the northern parts of Australia it is mostly a tropical climate. And in the south a subtropical climate. It is usually very hot in Australia. So if you are going there, don't forget to put on your sunscreen!

Australia's highest mountain is Mount Kosciuszko. It is 2.228 m high. And the biggest lake in Australia is called Lake Eyre. It covers one-sixth of the continent, so it's therefore very big.

Who? - Famous people

Australia is a very interesting country I think. It has a beautiful and warm climate, many unique animal species, fine cities, beautiful environment...
Well, I could keep on writing about great things from Australia even more. Australia has lots of great and lovely things. But one thing I never really thought of before is how many big celebrities who come from there. They have quite a special dialect in Australia so I can usually tell if someone is from there. But in the case of celebrities, I usually don't focus on the dialect. I usually focus on other things such as how they look and behave.

There are many celebrities who come from Australia, which I never before had imagined to come from there. For example, did you know that Hugh Jackman is from Australia? I didn't. And also Nicole Kidman is from Australia. But compared with Hugh Jackman, she was not born in Australia. But she grew up there.
